Goya
Goya, Aragon´s most important son. His works of art can be found throughout the province. Here are just some short tips in order to help you find them.
Goya was born in 1746 in Fuendetodos, a little village about 40 km from Zaragoza. Here one can still visit the house he
lived in with its kitchen, tewo bedrooms and a livingroom. Nearby in the Museo del Grabado is a permanent exhibition of his engravings, Los Desastres, Los Caprichos, Los Disparates and La Tauromaquia.
In Alagon, 24 km from Zaragoza in an old convent of the Jesuits, now Casa de Cultura, is a fresco painted by Goya when he was 19 years old.
In Calatayud, in the San Juan el Real Church is a painting depicting a scene with different saints, Saint Gregory, Saint Ambrose, Saint Jerome and Saint Augustine. It is not sure that this painting was painted by Goya, but many believe so. In any case it is worth seeing.
In Muel is another painting of these four saints, considered fathers of the Church, in the Hermitage Señora de la Fuente. Goya painted them directly on the gypsum wall in 1772.
In Remolinos is another painting dedicated to the four saints in the San Juan Bautista de Remolinos Church. This time Goya painted them in his studio on canvas that were afterwards fitted into the wall.
After staying in Italy some time Goya returned to Zaragoza. In the Basilica del Pilar he painted the dome of the Coreto, La
Adoracion del Nombre de Dios. The painting fills about 100 m2. Goya was 25 years old when he painted it.
Ten years later he painted the frescos of the Basilica from 1780 to 1781. At this time he was already a famous painter of the court in Madrid. In the frescos he painted the Regina Martyrium which have recently been restored. The painting covers 120 m at 28 m height. It shows the Queen of Martyrs in the center surrounded by more than seventy angels and martyrs. He had
some problems with Francisco Bayeu, another painter working with him, as he did not like his way of painting with quick and broad brush strokes, which was not considered as clasical painting.
In the Cartuja de Aula Dei he painted the gypsum walls of the church. He painted eleven murals in two years. Only seven can still be seen, some of them restored. He shows the Virgen´s life in them. During these two years his private life changed a lot as he got married to Josefa Bayeu and his first son was born.
In the Museum of Zaragoza there is a space dedicated to Goya. Here you can find many of his works. There are miniatures painted on copper, which were a present
for his son´s wedding and also big paintings, some of them of the members of the royal family, Carlos IV, Fernando VII and the Queen Maria Luisa. There is also a painting of a woman, Retrato de dama con mantilla, of 1824 which shows a lady that is supposed to be Goya´s lover who went to Bourdeaux with him.
In the Museo de Camon Aznar there is also a room dedicated to Goya´s engravings.
More works of the painter can be seen in the Patio de la Infanta de Ibercaja, among them a splendid selfportrait, and in the Bishop´s Palace.
In the Palace of the Duchess of Villahermosa, in Pedrola a village close to Zaragoza, one can see the Baile de las mascaras and a portrait of Ramon Pignatelli.
In the Museum of Huesca there is a series of four litographies dedicated to bulfighting and also some portraits.
All this makes us clear that Aragon is impregnated with Goya´s spirit as the painter himself was impregnated with Aragon´s.
